Powering Through the Lie
This week was the first week that I got to workout with my daughter at the gym. I was a proud dad as I watched her power through her workouts. She didn’t quit when her brain lied to her about the mortal danger she was in because she was becoming fatigued. I got to talk to her about how her brain is a liar with good intentions. Our brain’s main job is to keep us from danger and will leave a much larger margin for error than our safe society needs when physical or mental strain is experienced. It’s a joy to watch my daughter learn to push through those brain lies to a feeling of accomplishment that comes post-work out. It’s never a shame to think about quitting. The shame is appropriate when you give in to the liar-brain and quit before we should.
