Cyclical Desperation

Too often teams are so desperate to just have one person to fill a position that they fail to prepare for the day when they will need to fill it again. Being behind in recruiting robs the team of a seamless transition when the inevitable transitions occur. The most important investment of energy any team can make is to constantly develop others. The best teams have people who can play multiple positions if they have to. Life happens. People move. People get sick. People get pregnant. People die. Everyone should be able to take a vacation without the team suffering for it. Everyone will need to be replaced someday and it’s the team’s responsibility to begin developing that replacement before it’s needed or else they will always be desperate for one because they never bothered to get two.
