Encouragement and Protection

People who manage authority well do not use it to get rid of wrong-doers or under-acheivers. They simply use it to set directions and limits that keep the team moving toward that direction. To use a Wild West analogy, secure authority is more like the cattle-driver moving his team toward a destination and not a sheriff looking for “high noon” moments. The cattle-driver travels with and among the herd keeping watch against external threats and wayward movement. Secure leaders are both an encouragement and protection to the team.
