I have noticed that it is important to be very specific about a problem if we want to solve it. Specificity helps narrow down possible solutions. Time is saved in trial and error if we are careful to describe a problem with specific details. The problem is that sometimes our technical inexperience limits our ability to be specific. When we are dealing with problems with people, we tend to be less specific to spare feelings but that actually lengthens the time to a solution. Specificity is the fastpass to problem solving.
