Behaviors that are rewarded are reinforced. Teammates should be able to identify what the team values by what it rewards. If the best reward is an annual roster bonus, then merely keeping my job becomes the goal. Passable effort becomes the goal instead of innovation and initiative because those require risk and risk threatens my reward. It’s easier to show up every day and work hard enough to not lose my job. Too many reward systems make this possible because I believe that too many teams reward loyalty the wrong way.
