It only works on the weak minded.
We all start projects with a vision of what can be done. Along the way, we have a little annoying Jedi in our mind that attempts to wave its hand at us and convince us that what we started is too hard, too boring, or not worth sticking with. Great teams don’t mind trick themselves into the mindset that they are great at startups but are not made to finish. Finishing requires a strong mind that is willing to be content with the boring grind that comes before the reward. Is mind tricking ourselves to quit the same as shooting our self in the foot? It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
