Attention Equals Respect
Great teammates are respectful in meetings. This means they come prepared to contribute. If they don’t have enough information about how to prepare for a meeting, they ask for that information before the meeting begins. They pay attention to the entire meeting because they know that even topics that do not directly affect them may indirectly affect them down the road. They are present because an email would not be as effective so presence of mind is important. This takes discipline, intention and effort. It’s easy to check out of a meeting that we have not prepared for. Our attention in a meeting is directly connected to our level of professionalism. That may sting because we are all guilty of a wandering mind but we have to admit that scrolling through Facebook during a meeting is not our most professional moment.
