Books do get judged by their covers.
While the sentiment says that we shouldn’t be judged by our appearance, that just isn’t how our pervasive biases work. Our chosen appearance sends a clear message. A well-groomed and thoughtful appearance communicates that someone is disciplined and has an attention to detail. If a normally well-dressed person shows up not so well-dressed, people will likely think something is wrong or different. The opposite is also true. When a causal person “cleans up” there is a sense of anticipation as to what they are going to do differently. Our chosen appearance is always a chosen message that represents not only ourselves, but also our team.
