Emotions are Real
Every team must choose to live by what they know and not by how they feel. Emotions are real and should be validated, but they may not reflect reality. Team leaders need to understand emotions as a reality for the person experiencing them even if they do not share those emotions. It is always good to seek information about the cause of feelings to make sure there isn’t a misunderstanding before reacting to an emotional response to a situation. Too many unnecessary changes happen after someone expresses an emotion. Too many emotions get dismissed without a clear understanding. If I don’t feel the same as someone else, I need to know what the truth is because my feelings may be just as unreliable. Information usually helps us see the story just beyond our own experience. Great teams lean into the whole story before they react emotionally.
