Great teams understand that their operational values and team rules have to be enforced consistently. This allows everyone on the team to be able to predict outcomes of certain actions. When “A” happens, then “B” will happen. This makes accountability easier because everyone understands what should happen. Every team is tested to see if partiality will invade the team culture. What happens when the best or favorite player blows it? Will the rules apply to them? When it does, it communicates the value of the values and the team learns to keep them. When the rules don’t apply consistently, then the team values became worthless and an unpredictable popularity contest will become the new culture.
