Excellence versus Average
We all think that we know the difference between excellence and average. In sports, it’s easy to identify excellence at the end of the year when the MVP and championship trophies are handed out. Average is less obvious because it looks like everything else. It’s an outlook that defines good as the absence of bad. Excellence is not a measurement of survival but a measurement of improvement over time. The excellent team is satisfied when they are better than they were yesterday. The average team is happy they made it another day closer to the weekend without a negative experience. The next time a teammate says they had a good day, ask them what made it good. The answer will separate the average from the excellent.
