Unspoken Rules

A lack of safety causes people to hold back and hesitate. That isn’t a healthy team dynamic. Safety is found in a predictable environment. Having a few rules that the team agrees to abide by helps create a safe space to operate. Even in an environment with “no rules” the unspoken rules are quickly learned when people are punished or shamed for breaking them in the name of culture. That surprise punishment is what makes the “no rule” environment so unsafe. No rules doesn’t mean no accountability, it just means no predictable accountability. Great rules help people anticipate consequences.
