1 + 0 = 0?

Teams that operate “organically” with no clearly defined rules seem like a free spirit’s perfect setting to thrive. The problem is that if certain basic rules are not defined then confusion will set in to the culture of a team. I was once on a team that said their only policy is that they have no policies. It really says something about the reality of life when your one policy can never be true based on the premise of that policy. It was an unsafe working environment because most of the expectations were left uncommunicated. The team would work in one direction and then were blindsided when the team leader was disappointed.
