Put your money where your mouth is.

Some people cannot be trusted with resources. Sometimes that person is the teammate with a proven track record of mismanagement. On the other hand, it can also be the leadership that refuses to release control of resources. Those leaders are mismanaging the resources because they struggle with sharing control with those who are trustworthy. I was once on a team that told me I was empowered without a budget. I can tell you that it wasn’t empowering, despite those words. I was also constantly affirmed that I was doing a great job. It was a confusing message. Follow the money and you find the trust and competence. Leaders must remember that trust and competence cut in both directions. Great teams empower each other. Ordinary teams talk about empowerment because it’s a necessary leadership buzz word.
