The Tension of Motivation

There is an important tension to manage when a team chooses to go in a new direction. It’s difficult to walk the line between making a case for why the status quo is no longer sufficient and honoring the past in a way that acknowledges the good that has come from that same status quo. Change is a fearful prospect for most because of the unknowns and potential loss of influence and status. Choosing between options that are clearly good and bad is always easy. It’s when the alternative is not so bad that it is easy to act out of fear. If a ship is sinking it easy to motivate people to abandon ship. If the ship is just “meh” but still afloat people might not like the idea of walking off the boat. The art and science of vision casting successfully reminisces about the best days on the old boat and great days ahead that require a new one.
