Leaving well takes into account at least two important perspectives:
1. People matter. In maintaining the relationships we build while with the team, we acknowledge that those relationships were never contingent upon being on the same team. This is true even if the relationships were initiated on the team.
2. Opportunities should be pursued. When I coached, there was a sign in the locker room with a famous quote from Charles Schultz, “There is no heavier burden than greater potential.” When we recognize that a teammate has a tremendous opportunity, we should cheer them on as they walk through doors that open for them. It is bittersweet, but if I am a great teammate, then I will be happy for them.
