Having a culture of feedback is easier said than done. The measure isn’t in the statement but in how safe the team feels about giving feedback. This one is difficult to measure if a leader has not created a safe enough environment to receive feedback. They inevitably will hear a conditioned positive response when they go to measure their feedback system. “Everything is great and awesome! We love how we do things!” is the conditioned response of the team that has been subtly punished for their honesty in the past. Honesty must be rewarded with an appropriate response. Words, tone and body language go a long way. You say that you appreciate my candor but…you forgot to tell your face. In that moment, I learned that honesty isn’t the goal and next time I will make sure I don’t disappoint you.
