Bottom Up Communication

A team’s communication can be evaluated by its system of bottom up communication. Bottom up communication is communication from the teammates on the ground floor to the teammates that are decisions makers. How does information gets from those that implement the decisions to those that make the decisions? On small teams that can sometimes be the same people and bottom up communication comes in the form of self-evaluation. On larger teams it can be more difficult to pass real-time data from the implementation of a decision to those who are ultimately responsible for making those and future decisions. Teams that get a little better everyday do a good job of communicating real-time data to the right people so that informed decisions can be made and adjustments are quickly implemented. Teams that stagnate and deal with the same problems are likely struggling with bottom up communication.
