How We Lose

How we lose is just as important as how we win. When I win, I need to preserve the dignity of my opponent. When I lose I need to behave in a way that preserves my dignity and the dignity of my team. Wins and losses are emotional. Emotions can cause strong feelings. Losing feels awful. It’s not fun and it pierces deep into the narrative of how we view our team in relation to other teams. Disparaging a team that has more success than our team only demonstrates an attitude that likely lead to our loss in the first place. Instead, a loss should stimulate a humility that acknowledges our opponent’s victory and moves the team forward on a better path. Every win is preceded by losses that teach. Every loss is an opportunity to show the team’s quality.
