Freedom to do what is best, not what we want.

When we are free to operate in our role on a team we must understand that we are given the responsibility to perform a role that others depend on. Freedom on a team is not a complete autonomy because we are bound to make decisions that are in the best interest of the team. Our preferences must be sacrificed for the good of the team if they would stand in the way. To demand a preference on a team misses the point of joining a team in the first place. For a team leader to demand a less than best preference without lowering the expectations places the team in the difficult position of reaching unreasonable goals. The fight for autonomy can be a huge distraction.
