The Clarifying Question…

Communication is often the source of so much that goes wrong on a team. A great teammate both welcomes and asks clarifying questions. If I do not completely understand what a teammate is saying, I must move past the fear of asking a “stupid” question and clear up what seems to be confusing. Clarifying questions can sometimes be dismissed as annoying by those who have little patience with their teammates. This is a short-sighted view of team operations. Would we rather ask and answer an annoying clarifying question that prevents a disaster or talk about the confusion after the fact? Too often I allow the subtle intimidation of asking a clarifying question to result in a preventable mistake.
