Team Distraction: The Defense of the Status Quo

The way we do things can create a sense of comfort that is difficult to change when the time comes. Teams must acknowledge that the plan requires a departure from what the team is used to. If the method or plan that has been proven and effective in the past is changed, people will become uncomfortable. It takes disciplined leadership to weather and outlast the storm of complaints, doubts, and resistance. People work hard for comfort and they will fight hard to keep it. The team leader must refocus the team to get their eyes to look away from comfort and up to the next goal sitting on the horizon. Comfortable is rarely what we set out to be, but it is fiercely defended when we settle for it.
