Dangerous Gift

It takes a humble person to ask for advice. It takes a discerning person to know how to heed it. The reason is that advice seldom transfers experience like we hope. There are too many variables in each unique context to allow for advice that applies to specific situations. One of my favorite quotes from JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings describes advice as dangerous. It says; “Elves seldom give unguarded advice, for advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill.” The idea is that it also takes a humble person to know when the advice they would give is too dangerous for the person seeking it. What caused success for my team will likely give false hope to those looking to emulate it. We should not be so quick to teach others out of our successes.
