Failure to See Failure

I coached football for ten years and at the end of every year, we would show a highlight film at the team banquet. A lot of work goes into editing the game film into a highlight montage. This editing has a profound effect that is probably more common in other areas of our lives. We edit out the lowlights because it is more fun to remember the highlights. In fact I remember watching a highlight film and wondering how we ended up with such a poor record. The fact of the poor record didn’t change with the editing of the highlight film like my opinion of the season did after viewing it. Highlight films are an awesome way to end the year in celebration of the great moments, but we must be careful to not allow it to cause the illusion of success the editing produced. There is a lot to be learned from the film on the editing room floor.
