Zero Tolerance for Failure
If a team leader creates an atmosphere that communicates a zero tolerance for failure, the team will be oppressed under the pressure that expectation creates. If my teammates have to be perfect in order to be trusted, then I just began motivating them by the fear they will lose their reputation. Under those conditions, mistakes will be made but they will be shoved under the surface. If mistakes cannot be hidden, the team will know that blame will be found and punished in the form of diminished trust and empowerment. Blame and deception in the face of team failure limits learning from mistakes and necessitates a micromanaging posture from the leader.
