The Lingering Step of Micromanagement

There seems to be a running joke about leaders who micromanage. Micromanager’s insecurity and lack of trust in their team gets exposed and very often, they are the last ones on the team to realize it. I believe that micromanagement is simply a lingering step of coaching that is perpetuated by a lack of trust and communication. Everyone is micromanaged when they first join a team or receive a new responsibility. A great team leader will coach their teammates to know what, how and when to best complete their team task. Coaching requires three steps: telling, showing, and guiding. Micromanaged teammates are likely ready to move to the guide step before the leader is comfortable to move there. Some leaders, because of their personality and insecurity, never move to the guide stage of coaching and become the joke of the team.
