One of the best ways to avoid settling on “lucky” is to debrief every team event or experience. This seems to be very helpful when a team faces a struggle or obstacle. It is much more vital to debrief a victory or success because the team just learned what it took to succeed.
When a teammate describes an event as being “good” I always ask, “What made it good?”. That question coaches the eyes to see the source of success. This makes a repeat of that success much more likely.
