Signs of Friendship: The Smile
I know who my friends are by who sees me smile. They see me smile because we share similar interests. They see me smile because they know what makes me smile. They are my friend because they give me a reason to smile.
Now flip the scenario and it applies to us as well. If we are around someone who doesn’t seem to smile often is it possible they smile more often when we aren’t present? Do I give them a reason to smile? Do I assume that their apparent lack of joy is just a personality flaw? Could it be possible that it’s my personality that causes less smiling? Since we are not omnipresent it is quite presumptuous to assume that someone doesn’t smile enough. Everyone has a belly laugh and only your friends know what yours sounds like.
