Poison Antidote: Keep an Open Mind
When interacting with our teammates we must fight to keep an open mind towards the actions of others. This helps each of us do our part in cultivating a healthy team dynamic. It’s easy to say that we should keep our minds open. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline and practice to actually do it. Our minds are desperate to find patterns and jump to conclusions. We have to be intentional to delay that conclusion until we have enough information to make an accurate one.
Delaying deduction is much more difficult to do the better you know someone. When we truly know someone, we can fall into the trap of predicting their behavior too often. Past behavior can point to a pattern if such a pattern actually exists but past behavior on its own is not conclusive evidence for future motivation and action. People can change and great teammates extend the benefit of the doubt intentionally and often.
