The Danger of a Proxy…

Setting a measurable goal is important. It’s just as important to choose the correct measurement. We will go through all kinds of subtle antics to avoid the scary monster of ACCOUNTABILTY. This is true even when we set a measurable goal. If I am afraid of failing, I will often measure something that looks connected to success but doesn’t actually affect the outcome. This is called measuring a proxy. Since it doesn’t affect the outcome, it isn’t affected by failure either. The measurement is less likely to look bad and although worthless for improvement’s sake, it does wonders for our precious self-esteem.

You always improve what you track IF you actually track what you want to improve.
