The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth

Supportive feedback needs to be contingent to be truthful. Telling a teammate they did a great job when they didn’t is actually unsupportive because that person is missing out on the learning that comes through failure. Withholding praise for any reason also is unsupportive because a great teammate should shout the victories and whisper the defeats.

Truth is not always a whistle-blowing moment. Truth can also be a celebration of a great victory. There is likely no bigger waste than a teammate missing an opportunity to celebrate another teammate’s victory! Victories are what we all work so hard for and acknowledging them when they truly happen is the best way to be supportive.
