When Micromanagement is Appropriate

Micromanagement has a negative connotation because it is usually connected to an insecure leader that acts as a wet blanket over the team’s morale and productivity. However, micromanagement is not always wrong. Coaching is a form of micromanagement that helps develop people. Training should include a three-phased approach that includes telling, showing, and guiding. Once people have been shown the ropes, they should be empowered to make decisions on their own. It’s actually unempowering to give new people little direction. Warning: If this post just gave you an excuse to “coach” everyone…you might be a micromanager.
