Flat is nice but…

When there is a flat accountability structure with no clear leadership, there is little accountability. In my experience, people who seek such structures don’t understand leadership and responsibility. Or perhaps they do and are not confident enough to thrive in a setting with clear direction and consequences. It takes a certain kind of person to agree to be a part of something larger than themselves. It’s not really for everyone. We like to think so but great teams are made of great teammates. Great teammates understand great leadership and thrive under it without resenting it. They choose to belong because of the benefit teamwork can deliver. The cost of autonomy and decision making is small compared to the potential accomplishment and camaraderie.
