Imposing Our Will

When I coached football, I focused on the defensive side of the ball. I learned that defenses were often dictated by the offensive play call. Ordinary defenses read the play and reacted to what the opposing offense tried to do. The best defenses spend far less time reacting because they work to disrupt whatever play call the offense has in motion. When this happens, the defense is dictating to the offense and causes them to react. Maybe it’s a blitz or a surprise coverage, but the offense is forced to shift what they intended. This translates to life. There is always a little bit of maintenance but at some point in the day we must make a play that is not dictated to us. Great teams impose their will on their opponent.
