Linchpins are great…but the linchpin maker is better.
Coaching is one of the best things a teammate can do. Coaching empowers others to do what you do. Insecurity can cause us to want to be the only person on the team that is good at our job. It makes sense to surround ourselves with unique responsibility that only we can handle. There might be a sense of value we ascribe ourselves when we work hard to be the unicorn of the team. My greatest failure as a coach came when a team I coached didn’t win a game the year after I left the team. It wasn’t all on me, but I know I didn’t do a good job of duplicating myself. I should have prepared others better to carry on the tasks I knew I was responsible for. A team is only as good as its backup quarterback.
