Why the Bad Stay Bad

There is a paradox that happens on ordinary teams. People tend to separate into groups based on what seems like skill but is often really opportunity. If someone on the team proves to be competent, they often get more responsibility. That means they get more opportunities to prove themselves. A case could be made that an increase in opportunity for one teammate costs another teammate an opportunity. When one teammate gets more opportunity based on proven competence, they get to continue to hone that skill and increase both their competence and opportunities. Other teammates may never get the chance to develop their skills and therefore miss out on opportunities to do so. The rich get richer. Great teams don’t just give opportunities to the skilled, but also to those that need development as an investment in the teams overall quality.
