Effective meetings are as short as possible
Effective meetings are almost always shorter than most people are comfortable with. If a meeting is going to be useful, it needs to stop when it ceases to provide a useful opportunity to communicate or collaborate. Chit-chat before and after a meeting should be separate from the actual scheduled meeting time. This is a discipline close teams must master because when we like the people on our team, we tend to “hang out” when we should be working and work when we should be “hanging out”. The problem is that not everyone came to the meeting to catch up on everyone else’s weekend. Keep the meeting short and dismiss those that have other things to do.
