How to Spot Sentiment in Planning
When we anthropomorphize our team, organizations and systems, we can allow sentiment to cloud sound decision-making even though we know we shouldn’t. A good identifier to determine when sentiment is obscuring our judgement is when we discover that our plan didn’t happen and get overly disappointed that it didn’t pan out the way it SHOULD have. We are reaping the disappointment of sentimental planning. Should is a dangerous word because it’s evidence of a costly assumption. Any time we assume something to happen because it should, we are clouded by sentiment. Disappointment should lead to learning about reality and cause an adjustment for the future…but there I go being sentimental about what should happen.
