Necessary Endings, Unnecessary Feelings
When a teammate leaves a team, it is always difficult. When it is done for the wrong reasons, it feels personal. Feelings of abandonment and betrayal creep in and help everyone cope with a loss they didn’t expect. Those angry feelings help a team deal with the feelings of rejection that happen when a teammate chooses to leave. The same can be felt when a team asks a teammate to leave. It cuts both ways. These situations reveal the heart of a team. Maturity and experience help teams cope with turnover in a healthy way. Immaturity will allow bitterness to invade the culture of a team. We should take note on how a teammate is treated when they leave…the same will likely be said or done when our time comes. Guilt and shame are poor tools for team retention.
