Reframing the Story

We all have stories we choose to tell ourselves. Those stories help us make sense of the circumstances we find ourselves in. The stories are almost always a mixture of fact and fiction. Facts are what we know and fiction is what we place in the blank spaces of a story to help us reconcile the facts we know. Every great team has learned to reframe their story when new facts are obtained. Those facts must enter our chosen stories to replace the fiction we added to fill in the blank spaces. If we don’t, we are likely to live our lives choosing to believe the fiction our minds develop rather than the facts that are later discovered. This is the root of the self-deception that drives a team into mediocrity.
