Comforts of Preference

Preferences are universal. There are so many ways to accomplish any task a team faces. The identity of a team is often found in its preferences. Preferences guide our choices and are usually found in our ability to sustain our comfort levels. This can be good as a team manages complex change because preferences can act as a security blanket in the midst of anxiety-inducing challenges. In fact, the more a team fights for preferences, the more comfort and familiarity they are seeking. That quest for comfort and familiarity may be a sign that the team is anxious. There is nothing wrong with preference and comfort as long as it’s not considered non-negotiable to operate outside of them.
