Sentiment Substitute

Our minds like to make sense of things. When the team is experiencing something for the first time, it is difficult for them to completely understand exactly what is going on. The gaps in our understanding bother us so we fill those gaps with ideas, rationalization and other concepts that make sense to us. When this happens, we are more likely to depend on narratives that are consistent with values like justice and equality. These are nice sentiments in every situation. The problem is that when the team relies only on what has been just in the past, they may misapply it in a novel context. Understanding the difference between today’s context and the past helps us avoid substituting sentiment for truth.
