Common Sense Killer: Guilt

There are many times when the culture we create undermines our commitment to what we should do. We settle for less-than-best because we are afraid to let someone else down. The two most common areas where this happens nearly every day with every team are honesty and rest. Everyone knows that the honest truth is the best way to operate on a team but feedback is often sugar-coated or diluted to avoid hurt feelings. Rest is also neglected to avoid judgment or perception of a lack of work ethic. Everyone knows that we are at our best when we are rested but we short-change everyone so that we can spare our feelings of guilt for not appearing to work hard enough. Guilt trumps common sense far too often, and to our team’s detriment.
