Bombs and Baby Systems
Systems and methods can become like our favorite pets or even our babies. We were there when they were discovered. We helped them grow into what they are today. That may explain the emotional attachment we have for methods that become tradition. Change can be a scary thing when it threatens what we have so carefully developed. When we fail to realize that our team’s methods are obsolete, we fail to realize that our beloved method replaced someone else’s method months or years ago. It’s better to think of a system as a bomb that is made to be blown up some day. It’s empowering to know that everything is on the table for possible explosion if it helps the team improve.
